The Sweetback Sisters have always embraced a broad definition of country music, from western swing to rockabilly to honky tonk. On their newest project, Bulldog, they go back to the roots of the genre with their arrangements of six traditional songs and one depression-era ballad. Close harmony singing reigns supreme throughout the record, set off by gritty electric guitar and red-hot fiddling. Included are two songs from West Virginia ("Boozefighters" and "Moonshiner") that were collected by Gerry Milnes, father of fiddler Jesse Milnes; a blues ballad from Kentucky ("Darling Don't You Know That's Wrong"); two fiery fiddle tunes ("Bulldog" and "Walking in My Sleep"); a telling of the true story of 1930s bandit Otto Wood; and an epic setting of the traditional gospel song, "Glory Hallelujah".
